About – Why Axiom

Axiom has been in the works for over 3 years. It was first birthed in me while I was the youth pastor at Horizon Church, and has slowly progressed into what it now will be. I was studying through the book of Acts and came across this passage:

Acts 2:42-47
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

I wondered what church would look like if we tried this today. What if we had a church where multiple people taught, ate meals together, let the Holy Spirit work and move among His people, supported each other through hard times by giving to each other, worshiped and prayed together? Basically, what if we had church where ever we met?
At first Axiom was going to be an alternative service at Horizon Church on Saturday nights. Then it was going to be an off campus “church” that was located at The Trilogy Theatre in downtown Victorville. The Trilogy moved out of its location and subsequently ceased to exist, so that possibility died. Over the next couple of months God began to show me and manifest in me a desire to help those who had been hurt, and those who were still hurting. I wanted to reach out to those who had made mistakes in their lives, or perhaps felt that they were unworthy to follow God, much less love Him, because of divorce, addictions, sexual identity, etc.
Axiom will be a place where people can come and work out their own faith. It will be a place where you can come and be honest and open. You can feel safe and secure in knowing that no one will judge you or criticize you; but instead will care for you, love you and support you in your walk with Christ. We are not here to tear you down but to build you up so can walk daily through life knowing that people love you and support you. And more importantly, you will know that God loves you. A friend of mine put it perfectly when he said, “We are just beggars helping other beggars.”
Axiom also believes that Actions Speak Louder. The term has been around for ages but it really started to mean something when I first heard it from Mike Pilavachi and the Soul Survivor movement while we were at Summer Camp years ago. We need to take the words of Jesus and make them active. We need to stop telling people we love them and show them that we love them. This will be a core mission of Axiom and its people. Axiom will do this by serving the poor in our community, visiting those in nursing homes and hospitals, serving in community work projects, etc. Our serving is only limited by our imaginations.
So this is the first “explanation” of why we are starting Axiom. I urge you to please pray for us as this is a huge leap of faith. Starting a church is never easy and I’m sure at the very least it will raise a few questions. Hopefully this answered some questions. Or maybe it’s like watching an episode of LOST, which answers questions but then leaves you asking more.

Be His,

Mykel
